The Inspiration of Decadence: Dodo rediscovered - Berlin to London 1907-1998

at the The Ben Uri Gallery, London
22 Jun - 09 Sep 2012

Showcasing the work of German born illustrator Dodo, known for her work depicting the decadent nightlife of Berlin of the 1920s and 1930s. This exhibition provides a glimpse into the city’s bohemian society between the wars, set against the contrasting reality of a struggling  émigré existence in post-War London - fashion, jazz, sex, Jung, art, politics and migration.

Hui-lan Oei (1899–1992) is a fascinating individual, and married the equally intriguing Koo Vi Kyuin (V K Wellington Koo), a diplomat representing the Republic of China. She came from a Peranakan family, she was known for her sense of style and westernised adaption of Manchu fashion. She wrote two autobiographical books that I’d love to get my hands on.
